Allergy Services Q & A

What is an Allergy?

An allergy is your bodys response to a substance, (like pollen, fur, mold or dus) that shows your body is hypersensitive to the substance. When an allergy occurs, a person can experience many different types of reactions and symptoms.

What are some symptoms of Allergies?

• Itchy eyes, nose and throat
• Nasal congestion or runny nose
• Watery eyes
• Hives, itchiness or other skin conditions
• Shortness of breath or congestion in the chest

What does our Allergy Test consist of?

Allergy testing consists of a percutaneous skin test. This test feels like a bristled hairbrush being set on the skin, and we either perform the test on the forearms, or the patients back. The test will show you if you are allergic to over 50 different allergens and only takes 20 minutes. After the testing is complete, you receive your test results before you even leave the clinic.

Can children be tested?

Yes! Children can be tested. We generally start testing on children at age 2 and older, but early allergy treatment in children is a great preventative for asthma in the future!

What is Treatment?

Treatment for allergy symptoms is called Immunotherapy. Essentially, our program “de-sensitizes” your immune system to the things you are allergic to, and makes your immune system not respond negatively when it comes in contact with the allergens you are allergic to, in the future.
