Asthma/COPD Q & A

What’s the difference between asthma and COPD?

Both asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are breathing-related disorders that can interfere with your short-term and long-term health. While both affect your ability to breathe, the two conditions are different.

Asthma is a chronic condition that causes your airways to become inflamed and narrowed. This inflammation interferes with your breathing, making it difficult for you to take in enough oxygen.

You may have asthma that’s triggered by common allergens, like dust, or environmental factors, such as cigarette smoke. In some cases, asthma attacks can be severe enough to be life-threatening.

COPD is a group of chronic lung diseases that develop due to chronic inflammation in the lungs, typically due to smoking tobacco. Other diseases in the COPD group include emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and refractory asthma, a condition where your asthma symptoms are chronic and irreversible.

Due to the chronic inflammation in the lungs, those with COPD are often breathless and limited in the physical activities they can do.

Both COPD and asthma can be well-managed in the long term with the customized treatment plans available at Soriano Med.

What are the symptoms of asthma and COPD?

Common symptoms of asthma can come and go based on your activity level and exposure to allergen triggers. These symptoms include:

  • Wheezing
  • Coughing
  • Chest tightness
  • Shortness of breath

Symptoms of COPD are similar to asthma, but usually, don’t become noticeable until your lungs have already experienced significant damage.

How is asthma and COPD diagnosed?

If you’re experiencing unexplained breathing-related issues, including persistent shortness of breath or wheezing, the Soriano Med team offers on-site diagnostic testing to identify the cause of your symptoms.

In many cases, the providers request spirometry, a non-invasive breathing test that evaluates how much air you can move in and out of your lungs and how fast you can move it.

What treatments are available for asthma and COPD?

If you have asthma, you may benefit from short-acting or long-acting medications to treat and prevent asthma attacks. The Soriano Med staff also works with you on an emergency treatment plan for sudden or severe asthma attacks, which likely includes inhaled medications that quickly reduce airway inflammation and make it easier for you to breathe.

If you have breathing difficulties that relate to COPD, your Soriano Med provider creates a treatment plan to address both your short-term and long-term health needs. They can provide you with resources to successfully quit smoking and medications like steroids that reduce lung inflammation.

When your COPD condition is advanced, you may need oxygen therapy during in-office visits or for use at home. Your provider can also work with you to make the necessary lifestyle changes the help you cope with your COPD symptoms and limitations.
